Objectives
i) The Primary objective of the project is to
sustain democracy and enhance good
governance in Nigeria through peaceful free and
fair elections.
Other
objectives are:
2)To
educate and sensitize women particularly
educated elites and youths especially those who
will be eligible to vote for the first time to
register as voter and on voter rights
2)To
train the trainers who will train others on
voters education including voting
procedure and honest principles for voting.
2)To
set up state committees to monitor and train
others on the art of vigilance to avoid
elections malpractices and violence during
elections.
Identity of targeted group
The primary target groups are women and youths
in the South west Nigeria comprising of Lagos,
Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti and Ondo States. Special
programmes and attention were given to women in
the grassroots and educated elite women . In
addition youths between the ages 18 - 22
years who were not eligible to vote in the
previous general elections were also targeted
for mobilization sensitization, education and
training.
Impact on targeted group
The
women and youths in the South west were
mobilized to register as voters, which will
enable them to vote for candidates of
their choice and be voted for. The targeted
group were trained on their rights as voters and
voting procedures so as to avoid the hitherto
huge loss of votes as a result of irregular
voting. Furthermore a core group of task force
committees in each State were trained on
vigilance techniques and voter education which
will be replicated in their Local Government and
communities for multiplier effects.
Projects Method
The
following method are proposed for the
achievement of the objectives;
a)
Sensitization and enlightment campaign
- (i) Media Campaign were held to
publicize and enlighten the target groups,
through press conference, Radio and T.V talks on
voter education. Other forms of sensitization
and enlightment campaign on voter rights
targeting women and youths in the six States in
South west goe political zone of Nigeria.
(ii) Radio Jingles were produced in
Yoruba (the predominant language)
(iii) Posters, Stickers and leaflets were
produced and disseminated widely in the targeted
six states. (iv)
Market Outreaches were conducted in one of
the most popular market in tha State
(v) Motor park Outreaches were conducted
in the biggest Motor parks in each State
Capital.
b) Voter education training and workshop -
(i) Selection of women and youths as
representatives from the states. (ii)
Production of Training Manuals and Handbooks
for use by trainers. (iii) Train the Trainers
Training workshop were organize in the States.
c) Constituting State's Committees to monitor
the implementation of voter's Rights, train
others on voter education and vigilance against
elections malpractices and violence-
The participants were constituted themselves to
States Committees to train and educate others
who will in-turn train more women and youths in
their State on voter education, voting procedure
and to monitor voting, and registration towards
the prevention of voting irregularities and
violence.
Monitoring and Evaluation
An
immediate evaluation exercise were carried out
after the workshop/programs through completion
of prepared questionnaires by the participants
to access their level of understanding and
assimilation. |
