Two Day Mobilization Workshop on Human Trafficking and Forced Labor (May 31 - June 1, 2005)The Women's Consortium of Nigeria (WOCON) in partnership with the International Labor Organization's Action Program against Human Trafficking and Forced Labor in West Africa (ILO - PATWA) is organizing a training workshop as a first step towards national mobilization against forced labor and human trafficking in Lagos State. The ILO - PATWA is designed to address the structural dimensions of the demand and supply aspects of forced labor and trafficking and its goal is to eradicate and prevent forced labor and trafficking in Nigeria and the West African sub-region in general. The project aims to raise awareness and improve the knowledge base on forced labor and trafficking in Nigeria, mainstream these issues into the national development and poverty reduction strategies, and develop appropriate community-based interventions to combat these, with a focus on prevention, protection and rehabilitation. It will build on the experience of ILO/IPEC's LUTRENA Project to combat child trafficking and cooperate closely with it. In line with the project aim, WOCON is participating in the organization of this workshop for Women, Youth, Hotel and Transport Worker Unions as key stakeholders to sensitize them on issues of forced labor and human trafficking and prepare them for the necessary fallow up actions. Sensitization of Rural Communities for the Prevention of Human Trafficking Especially of Women and Children (July 20 - July 22, 2005)In the years of experience conducting campaigns and programs to show the need for the combat of Human Trafficking, WOCON has recognized that sensitization of major stakeholders in the rural communities is an effective way of eliminating the incidents of Human Trafficking, especially that of women and children in our society. WOCON is conducting a sensitization program in Ebonyi, Ogun and Lagos State with the support of the US Ambassadors Special Self-Help Fund. Community Leaders, Immigration officials, Police Officers, Traditional and Religious Rulers and Chiefs, representatives of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Community Based Organizations (CBOs), Government Functionaries, Media Representatives, Market Men and Women, Traders and Children of Ebonyi State will be invited. In an effort to reach out to as many major stakeholders as possible.
